Is insect and fungus protection used in the HBE system?
Components used in the HBE system are made of glulam dried to 10-12% humidity. These components are most often produced from scandinavian spruce. This kind of spruce is characterized by low annual growth which considerably impacts wood properties and quality. Furthermore, the homogeneous humidity of entire glulam components causes that only the surface of wall and roof components absorbs moisture from rain during construction. These components then quickly return the absorbed moisture. During glulam’s production process, biological factors are largely eliminated, making the structure highly resistant to insects and fungi. Glulam is a biologically dead material, therefore different kinds of borers won’t find any nutrients in it.
